2017, Here We Come!
We had an amazing 2016, opening and relocating six new stores and providing a greater diversity of services than ever to our neighbors in the Central Texas area. We plan on an equally amazing 2017, with a new store opening in Leander, expansion of our education initiatives, and pursuing more legislative reform to continue empowering the individuals we serve.
Working with the Government – for All
Over the years, we’ve been privileged to create life-changing opportunities by engaging with our state legislature. Our agenda this year will focus on lifting the enrollment cap of 150 students ages 19-50 to expand The Goodwill Excel Center adult high school into other cities across the state. In fact, our high school is now offering courses to 25 women in the Lockhart Women’s Correctional Facility! We’ll also be very vocal in highlighting the need to maintain our current funding for these innovative, transformational services.
On January 24th, Brittney Walton, an Excel Center graduate, shared an impassioned testimony to the Texas State Senate on the impact of The Goodwill Excel Center on her life and the lives of her children.
We will also continue to partner with the Texas Smart on Crime Coalition during this 85th Legislature to discuss how increasing education and job training will reduce re-incarceration. We know the harder it is for someone to find employment after being released from prison, the greater the chance he or she will end up going back to prison. A working Central Texas, is a safer, stronger Central Texas for all!
Goodwill Excel Center Expansion Plans
We are continuing to add exciting electives to our course catalog like Astronomy and Computer Science at our adult high school, The Goodwill Excel Center. In addition to their regular courses, we have begun offering our students Career and Technical Education Courses, in partnership with The Goodwill Career and Technical Academy, such as Architecture & Construction, Health Sciences, and Business Management & Administration.
We’re Expanding The Goodwill Exploration Center
Having a free on-site licensed childcare center, serving infants to children age 5, has meant an accelerated high school diploma for many of our students. We’re adding new teachers and instruction for the children to get them on par with other children when they enter kindergarten.
Specialized classroom and onsite instruction for new moms!
Because so many of our students already have recently started a family, we’ve added education options for students with newborns or who are expecting. This cohort of women works closely with a life coach who helps them navigate a flexible education plan that accommodates their schedule and the schedule of their newborn child.
More High School Graduates in the Austin Area!
Last year, we had 131 graduates, bringing the total of new high school diploma holders in the Austin area to 181! We hope to increase this number by 100 in 2017.
Our Goodwill Career and Technical Academy (GCTA) is expanding, too!
The GCTA now offers four new medical courses and a training course for PC Technician/A+ Certification. And to meet employer demands, we’re now offering Certified Drivers License (CDL) training at our Goodwill Resource Center in South Austin. You can review all of our current course offerings here!
All this good news would not be possible without you, so thank you for supporting Goodwill Central Texas by shopping and donating to our stores, and empowering 100,000 Central Texans to transform their lives through work!
