B2S and the Exploration Center
Welcome Back to ALL of Our Students!
From infants to adult learners, The Goodwill Excel Center classrooms are buzzing with excitement! And as many of our students know, inadequate childcare can quickly derail the completion of a high school diploma. Excel Center students have access to free, on-site and licensed childcare, and this makes all the difference! We caught up with 2017 Excel Center graduate, Jenissa, to find out how the Exploration Center helped her earn a diploma.
When Jenissa began attending classes at The Goodwill Excel Center, she arranged for an outside babysitter to watch her son. But, she quickly learned that paying a sitter was costly and strained her ability to continue attending classes regularly. Fortunately for Jenissa, she was able to join The Excel Center CLIMB Program (Community Learning Initiative for Mom’s & Baby’s) while her son, Silas, was still an infant.
The CLIMB Program enables new mothers and their babies (ages 6 weeks old through walking toddlers) to attend class together, in a specially designed classroom. The infants learn to interact with other babies, while the Moms develop a peer support group to help keep one another motivated and attending class regularly.
Jenissa valued this time with her young son and says the flexibility allowed her to feed and care for her newborn so she didn’t have to worry about leaving him with anyone else. After those first important months, Jenissa learned she would be able to enroll Silas at the Exploration Center – he would receive onsite childcare so she could continue attending classes and complete her education.
Jenissa graduated in June! And, one of her teachers even referred her for a paid internship here at the Goodwill Community Center! Now she’s headed back to school once again. This time, Jenissa will start classes at Austin Community College, studying Graphic Design, and her son will be enrolled in an early childhood education program!
Jenissa says she is still astounded by all of the support and commitment from Goodwill staff. Now, as an intern for Goodwill, she feels like her team members have also become her family and support system. When she talks about the Exploration Center, Jenissa says “Childcare was essential! Without childcare, it makes it difficult to reach your full potential.”
