Debunking the Charity Myth

Think Before You Donate: False

During this time of year, many people are in a giving frame of mind and are very generous with charities and non-profit organizations.

But also around this time of year, people tend to share a social media post that has very inaccurate information. The email says "think before you donate," and we agree! But, we also want you to "think before you repost"!

This inaccurate chart shows up around this time every year. Read the Snopes article below before you repost!

Because there are so many rumors out there, we at Goodwill Central Texas are addressing them.

You can start here, by seeing what Snopes has reported about the widely-circulated social media post:

Since every Goodwill is individually governed and operated to meet the needs of their community, we want to share more specific information about Goodwill Central Texas. When you donate and shop, you fund our vision of empowering 100,000 Central Texans to transform their lives through work. How will we accomplish this impressive feat? With education through our free charter high school, The Goodwill Excel Center – the only school in Texas where adults ages 17-50 can earn their high school diploma. With the Goodwill Career and Technical Academy – a school offering vocational and career training for certifications in high-demand fields with direct job placement. And through essential career advancement training, specifically tailored for local businesses, helping both employer and employee thrive. These initiatives not only provide access to jobs for all members of our community, but access to life-changing careers, inspiring a generational impact that lifts Central Texas families out of poverty.

These initiatives take funding, and that’s where your continued donor and shopper loyalty to Goodwill Central Texas makes such a difference for us, and all those Central Texans that we are putting on a new path to employment. YOU are changing lives. YOU help create jobs!

Our retail stores were created to generate the means to finance our vision. To that end, 90 cents of every dollar generated goes towards that vision.

Here are some actual numbers about our impact on Central Texas – stay tuned for 2016 numbers in the near future:

  • $227.1M – Total economic impact in 2015 through wages earned and state tax revenue.
  • 13,297– Number of people who received job-related services in 2015.
  • 3,827 – Number of job placements in 2015.
  • 29.4M – Pounds diverted from the landfill in 2015.
  • 1,178 – Number of employers with whom we placed Central Texans seeking work in 2015.

And Goodwill Central Texas is LOCAL - we are YOUR Goodwill! We currently span from Georgetown to San Marcos, Bastrop to Fredericksburg. That’s a lot of territory!
