Every day is Earth Day at Goodwill!
Just like we’re good stewards of our donations, we’re good stewards of the Earth. When donations are not purchased from our stores, we “up-cycle” them. In fact, we’re one of the largest recyclers in Central Texas, with the goal of becoming a zero waste organization! In 2015, we diverted 29.4 million pounds of items from our landfills, including almost 15.4 million pounds of recyclables.
Not only does this make good environmental sense, it makes good business sense too! The revenue generated through our recycling and up-cycling efforts support our vision of empowering 100,000 Central Texans to transform their lives through work.
We also provide these services to meet the growing needs of businesses, government agencies, local organizations, and goods donors to up-cycle and properly recycle items no longer needed.
The Goodwill Resource Center – a recycling powerhouse
In 2015, Goodwill Central Texas diverted over 29.4 million pounds of items from our landfills, including almost 15.4 million pounds of recyclables. That’s an 81.3% diversion rate!
The Goodwill Resource Center is a hub of recycling activity, measuring in at 124,000 square feet; it is well suited to handle large scale recycling and repurposing projects for businesses to meet their green initiatives.
But we don’t stop there. We also work closely with organizations such as Dell, Seton Healthcare Family, and the City of Austin to execute their large-scale recycling needs.
We recycle electronics – our partnership with Dell Reconnect®
Since 2004, Goodwill Central Texas has partnered with Dell Reconnect to recycle electronics of all types.
When Goodwill receives donated computers, electronics and accessories at any of our locations, our specially trained staff inspects each item and determines whether to reuse or recycle it.
Reusing & Reselling Electronics
Following Dell’s rigorous personal privacy and security standards to destroy sensitive information (the same strict guidelines used by the U.S. Department of Defense), items are thoroughly tested and refurbished before being sold through Goodwill Computer Works, either in the retail store or online!
If the electronics are determined to be unusable, they are broken down and sold for parts or responsibly recycled. We currently recycle 285 tons of e-waste per month – all diverted from landfills!
Everything at Goodwill finds a new beginning, so we can empower Central Texans to find their new beginning.
When it comes to recycling, we don’t miss a beat!
