Goodwill Central Texas Awarded St. David’s Foundation Opportunity Grant

AUSTIN, TX — Goodwill Central Texas was a proud recipient of the St. David’s Foundation Opportunity grant, $32,500 each year for two years, to support mental health wellness services for adult high school students of The Goodwill Excel Center. Susan Hunt, Lead Life Coach at The Goodwill Excel Center, and Danie White, Manager of Goodwill Counseling Services, accepted the grant award at the St. David’s Foundation Headquarters on November 4th.

Opportunity Grants, a new initiative by St. David’s Foundation, is aimed at collaborative, creative new approaches to addressing a wide range of health needs across Central Texas. A total of ten grants were distributed to companies around Austin.

Goodwill Central Texas will use the Opportunity Grant to help fund a mental health counselor position, which will provide individual and group counseling services to students at The Goodwill Excel Center—ultimately helping address student mental health and emotional function so that they may progress toward positive educational outcomes and career pathways.

“The St. David’s Opportunity Grant plays a critical role in providing funding that will meet a key component of services needed in order to more effectively and thoroughly serve our students,” said Susan Hunt. “Research teaches us that healthy emotional and mental wellness have direct impact on positive student progress. We’ve witnessed this reality at The Goodwill Excel Center, where many of the students have experienced some form of current or past trauma. This truth can also have implications for daily functioning in other realms of life.”

Through the new Mental Health Counselor role, The Goodwill Excel Center will fill a support gap for the students, equip them from a trauma-informed perspective, and pave the way for achievement of educational goals and sustaining career pathways.

Earl Maxwell, CEO of St. David’s Foundation, stated, “The goal of these new Opportunity Grants is to invest in innovative, collaborative and creative solutions to some of the healthcare challenges facing our community. The Foundation is delighted to partner with these respected local nonprofits to explore ways to address emerging healthcare needs here at home in Central Texas.”
