Goodwill Summer Style Guide: Pool Parties for Pennies

Heading into Memorial Day, the Austin weather forecast looks downright dreary. But that doesn't mean you can't turn it into a legendary long weekend anyway, and Goodwill can help!

To prove just how, using Austin Goodwill as a one-stop shop for summer fun and fashion, we headed straight for the indoor pool at SpaSocial in Round Rock to show off this inspirational Summer Style Guide. We hope it motivates you to make a trip over to your local Goodwill Store for all the pool-side fashion, entertaining, and activities you need to make the most of your long weekend, inside or outdoors! As my Grandpa always used to say, "Be good, be safe, but don't forget to have fun." Thank Goodwill It's Friday, y'all!

Our fearless model, The Distillery co-founder Catelyn Silapachai, proves that you can get that trendy beach babe look on a budget with these DIY denim cutoff shorts (full step-by-step tutorial coming next week), a fringed cotton tank from the Goodwill Outlet on Burleson Road, New-With-Tags (NWT) Kate Spade sandals from the "Gucci Goodwill" on Lake Austin Boulevard, and a vintage kimono (coming soon to Catelyn's online store). Just add gold jewelry (also from The Distillery) and you're literally Pinteresting for pennies. Back in the 1970s, Texas native Farrah Fawcett made denim cutoffs a summer staple for women everywhere, and we all know there's no better way to get the perfect pair than to turn some thrifted full-length jeans into custom cuties -- and guys can do the same with chinos! If you want to turn your own tank or tee into this fringed look (or another trendy DIY t-shirt design), follow our Pinterest board all about Thrifted Tees for thousands of how-tos, and check back later this summer for our own faves.

Did you know that all Goodwill Central Texas Stores now sell new-with-tags swimwear donated by Target and other retailers? Get the look for less -- like these two on-trend bikinis, one boho and one retro -- by mixing and matching separates, or scoring a sweet new one piece, then adding coverups, sandals & beach towels, all thrifted at your local Goodwill store. Embrace your inner Gidget by grabbing some inflatable beach balls or inner tubes, even badminton sets, like these brand-new, still-in-the-package ones we found at the North Lamar Store.

Nothing says summer in Texas like a frosty cold margarita on the patio. Use Shoestring Magazine's entertaining ideas, like the recipes for this DIY jalapeno-infused tequila and

homemade watermelon agua fresca (served in the empty tequila bottle as a carafe!), combined to make Spicy Watermelon Margaritas, and serve them in Goodwill glassware by the pool. Arrange a bouquet, like this colorful local one from Prickly Pair Farm in Lampasas, in a fun vase from Goodwill to really set the scene for your backyard or poolside BBQ buffet. For snacks, grab some Mason jars and lids at your local Goodwill Store, fill partially with dip, and stick some celery & carrot sticks in longwise for portable poolside or picnic snacks, plus pretty serving trays and plates, like these vintage Greek and Italian porcelain beauties from Goodwill on South Lamar, piled high with cheese and fresh fruit or more patriotic cupcakes.

Nothing says summertime like a beach or poolside read, and Goodwill has all the books you need -- and some you just maybe wan1t. Scour the shelves at any Goodwill Store for serious discounts on best-sellers, classics, and out-of-print favorites, or brave the Goodwill Outlet to bag serious savings, where all books are just 5 for 99 cents! We even found this fun, summery, vintage WWII era LIFE magazine at a Goodwill auction at the South Lamar Store!

You just never know what you're going to find at Goodwill, but one thing's for certain: When it comes to summer fun and summer style on a Shoestring, we've got you covered.

Huge thanks to Amanda at SpaSocial for hosting us to shoot this Summer Style Guide look book, to Catelyn for becoming our fearless beach babe on a budget, to blogger Courtney Mirenzi for assisting with both shopping the Goodwill Outlet for goods & styling the shoot, and to Goodwill staff photographer Bobby Longoria (and his cameras) for braving the heat & humidity of the indoor pool with humility & humor!
