Introducing Melissa – DIY Expert and Guest Blogger

love you so much mural

Oh Austin, how much fun we’re going to have together thrift shopping, crafting DIYs, and talking about the programs and services provided by Goodwill Central Texas for empowering individuals in the community through work. I’m bouncing off the walls right now, I’m so excited to get started as your new guest blogger and social media guide!

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Melissa, and I’m the founder & editor of Shoestring, a blog and online magazine I launched back in 2007 to share my experiences searching for that “Champagne Life on a DIY budget.” Last year, my husband and I moved to Austin from Boston, where Goodwill was first founded back in the late 1800s, so you could literally say that the Goodwill mission is in my blood. Or at least it’s always felt that way to me!

My first pair of designer jeans back in high school in the mid-90s came from Goodwill – now, almost everything in my South Austin home is either a secondhand score or an upcycling project from Goodwill – and as a budget living and eco-friendly writer, I love that by shopping at Goodwill I’m not only saving money and keeping awesome stuff out of the landfill, I’m giving back to my community, as well.

Here’s me (on the left) behind the scenes at Goodwill with a wall of textile bales headed out to be recycled, after they’ve been offered for sale in the Goodwill Retail Stores and then the Outlet, along with one of my favorite sisters in secondhand style: Marisa of New Dress a Day. Our Goodwill joy is real, my friends.

If you’re not already, please follow my new adventures as your Goodwill Central Texas, DIY Expert on Facebook and Twitter, and especially on Instagram and Pinterest – where I’ll be sharing daily finds from Goodwill Stores around Austin plus style and DIY inspiration for your own Goodwill finds, just in time for the holidays!

In the meantime, check out some of these recent Goodwill Central Texas posts on Shoestring from my Thank Goodwill It’s Friday series, where I share my Goodwill scores, style posts, tips & tricks, and DIY projects each – you guessed it – Friday:

Those scores? I wore them all through March at SXSW – repping Austin’s thrift scene for all the world to see with my “South by Goodwill” #SXGW style.

And on into April, when I rocked head-to-toe Goodwill for the Tribeza party to celebrate the opening of the Getaway Motor Club on the East Side, dancing the night away to Dale Watson & sipping Eastciders.

Goodwill 10th and Lamar

Later on that month, I got to celebrate the opening of the latest Goodwill Central Texas Store at 10th & Lamar with a little sneak peek and tour! Naturally, I didn’t go home empty handed – or disappointed.

And then in May, when we moved into our new house – our first home, which we’re fixing up one room and DIY project at a time – I knew just where to go for tools and supplies: Goodwill, of course.

Last, but certainly not least, a few weeks ago I spent my fall shopping budget at the Big, Big, Big Sale at Goodwill Central Texas, when almost everything was 50% off for one day only. I popped tags, oh yes, yes I did – and went home with $199 of stuff worth about $3500. More on that later: I still have an entire moving box full of home decor and cookware, which will feature prominently in upcoming stories for entertaining and gift giving on a budget, and I don't want to give anything away.

Stay tuned! And say hello on social media or in the comments below, I can’t wait to meet y’all!
