SIMPLE RECYCLING, NOT SO SIMPLE
Today, Simple Recycling will begin providing curbside pick-ups of household items and clothing to many areas in Austin. This service is part of the City of Austin Zero Waste initiative and is geared towards convenient diversion of unwanted items from the landfill. Because Goodwill is the original recycler in Central Texas with over 60 years of service to our community, with our own commitment to becoming a Zero Waste organization, we appreciate that the City of Austin is committed to its Zero Waste initiative. But Simple Recycling isn’t so simple.
Simple Recycling is a for-profit company that sells your items to Texas thrift and resale stores, and then national, and international buyers. Because Simple Recycling is a for-profit company, when you leave items for curbside pick-up, they are NOT a tax-deductible donation. Additionally, this service will create direct competition to all local nonprofits who rely on goods donations to fund programs and services for people in our community. Goodwill, for example, sells goods donations in our retail stores to fund education, training, and career-advancement services to underserved people in Central Texas. The right career-path can be the difference that transforms a person’s life; providing the opportunity for a family to break the cycle of poverty and create lasting generational change. In 2016, we’ll provide career services to more than 13,000 people and place Central Texans into more than 3,000 jobs.
Goodwill also works tirelessly to responsibly recycle all of our goods donations, whether they are sold in our stores or diverted from the landfill for repurposing. We are dedicated to being good stewards of donations made by the community, and maximizing the impact of every dollar. This year, we project that we’ll divert more than 37 million pounds from our landfills.
Lastly, Goodwill provides convenience. We have almost 60 easy to access donation locations, and we provide residential and commercial donation pick-up services, as well as, estate packing services and community donation drives – all FREE OF CHARGE. Better yet, you don’t need to worry about ordering specific bags and waiting for them to be mailed to you. We’ll gladly accept donations in any receptacle.
There are many worthy local nonprofits who depend on the generous donations of our community to provide services to our neighbors - giving you many options to donate your unwanted items. Ultimately, we all want to divert from the landfill and help keep Central Texas greener place to live, work and play. Just know the facts before you part with your unwanted items and consider choosing your community first.
