“Thanks to Goodwill, I was given a career and a plan and a purpose – my road to recovery.”

My name is GG. I used to live in a 6-bedroom home with my husband and five wonderful children. On the surface, we were a happy, normal family. But it was all a façade. We were going down a road to destruction.

But this is a letter of thankfulness. It is that time of year, after all. And I’m thankful that I was sent to prison for three years. It sounds strange, but before prison, I wasn’t a good mom.

My story begins with years of alcohol and drug addiction and a veteran husband with PTSD and his own addictions. When I lost my mom, I went over the edge, made some bad decisions, and went to prison. My husband, Jeremy, tried to hold the family together after I was sentenced but Child Protective Services eventually intervened and placed our children into foster care.

After three years I was released, and while in a transitional home, other residents told me to seek out help from Goodwill. A thrift store? But I soon learned about their career programs and signed up. Goodwill helped me get a part-time paid internship with Prison Justice League and I began to see a glimmer of hope. By now, my children were in their third foster home. Luckily, they’d all been kept together and I was allowed one hour supervised visits every week. It was rough. My estranged husband reached out and, though it was slow, we started the process of getting our family back…God and Goodwill were my rocks.

After my internship, Goodwill Staffing Group hired me as a temporary Data Entry Specialist. Then, I was hired full-time at Goodwill as a receptionist for the Resource Center.

But the best was yet to come…on my birthday, our kids came home! We’re living in a small apartment, and we’re together. All of the children are thriving, and both Sean, my son, and Alyssa, my daughter, have enrolled in Goodwill educational and training programs. Also thanks to Goodwill, my husband, Jeremy, has a full-time job with Priebe Security. For all this, I’m thankful. Our family mantra has become “We are overcomers.”

So, today, I’m thankful for Goodwill, for second chances, for the support of the people at Goodwill who helped me and continue to encourage me. I’m thankful for my new career…I have a true sense of fulfillment.

I’m just one of thousands of people that you have helped through your support of Goodwill. I invite you to [donate online] or donate your gently-used items at any one of our [donation locations]. Together, we are empowering 100,000 Central Texans to transform their lives through work. We will create a bright future for these individuals, their families, and all of Central Texas.

My future? As the road unwinds, we never know what is around the bend. But I know it will be something amazing. And I’m thankful for all of it.

In gratitude,
