DIY Playing Card Costume: Turn Thrifted Finds Into Halloween Magic

Looking for a Halloween costume that’s creative, affordable, and a little unexpected? We’ve got an ace up our sleeve! With a few thrifted finds, some fabric scraps, and a little DIY magic, you can transform an everyday outfit into a one-of-a-kind playing card costume.

We teamed up with Heather @WearTrash who shopped Goodwill Central Texas for the pieces to bring this look to life. Using a simple appliqué technique, she transformed a thrifted white dress into a playful three of hearts costume that’s perfect for Halloween.

Ready to play your cards right? Here’s how to recreate the look!

What You’ll Need for Your DIY Playing Card Costume

Before you get started, head to your nearest Goodwill Central Texas store to find the foundation for your costume. A simple white dress works perfectly, but you can also get creative with a white shirt and skirt or another outfit you already own.

Materials:

  • A thrifted white dress or outfit
  • Scissors and Elmer’s washable school glue
  • A sewing machine with a zigzag stitch setting
  • Red fabric for the hearts and numbers (fabric scraps work great!)
  • Black tights and red shoes to complete the look ( these are optional)

Thrifting tip: Check Goodwill for fabric you can repurpose, too! An old shirt, pillowcase, or other textile in the right color could provide everything you need for your appliqué pieces.

How to Make Your DIY Playing Card Costume

The secret to this costume is appliqué, a sewing technique that involves attaching decorative fabric shapes to another piece of fabric. It’s an easy way to personalize thrifted clothing and turn a simple garment into something entirely new.

Step 1: Cut Out Your Appliqué Pieces

Start by cutting your desired shapes from your red fabric.

For this three of hearts costume, you’ll need three heart shapes and the number 3. You can also create additional numbers or hearts to decorate the sides of your dress.

Arrange your cutouts on the garment before attaching them to make sure you’re happy with the placement.

DIY tip: Want to make a different playing card? Switch up the numbers, shapes, and colors to create your favorite card from the deck!

Step 2: Glue Your Pieces Into Place

Once you’ve decided where everything goes, use a small amount of Elmer’s washable school glue to temporarily secure each appliqué piece to your garment.

This helps keep the fabric in place while you sew, making it easier to achieve a neat, finished look.

Allow the glue to dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Sew Around Each Appliqué

Now it’s time to make your design permanent!

Using your sewing machine’s zigzag stitch setting, carefully sew around the edges of each appliqué piece.

You can adjust the stitch length and zigzag width to create the look you want. Denser stitching will cover more of the fabric’s raw edges, helping make your design more durable.

Pro tip from Heather: Before sewing your costume, practice with different zigzag stitch settings on a scrap piece of fabric. Experiment with the stitch length and width until you find the finish you like best.

Once you’ve stitched around all your shapes, your custom playing card design is complete!

Step 4: Complete Your Costume

Now for the finishing touches!

Heather paired her three of hearts dress with black tights and bright red shoes for a look that’s equal parts playful and polished.

You can recreate her styling or put your own spin on it with accessories you already have. The beauty of a DIY Halloween costume is making it completely your own!
