Goodwill TECH + BETTY: Bridging the Digital Divide

In today’s digital age, access to technology isn’t just a convenience—it’s a necessity. At Goodwill Central Texas, we continually innovate new ways to help community members access the tools and support they need to succeed. From digital skill building to job search assistance, we’ve got you covered on your path to a new future.

We began offering digital literacy training services in 2017, and have continually ramped up efforts since then. In 2023, we used the FCC’s Affordable Connectivity Outreach Award to hire our first Digital Navigator. And in 2024, we launched two new digital equity programs: BETTY and Goodwill TECH.

BETTY: Bringing Education and Technology To You

Our digital equity van, BETTY, enables us to provide internet and computer access to individuals wherever we go. The van is outfitted with multiple computer workstations where participants can:

  • Get online
  • Explore career options
  • Receive job search assistance
  • More

Goodwill TECH: Tools for Equity, Connectivity, and Hope

The Goodwill TECH program exists to provide Central Texans with the devices, skills, and support they need to succeed in today’s digital landscape.

A learn and earn model was first implemented in 2022, taking a holistic approach to expanding digital services to community members, as well as our team members, by providing additional opportunities to highlight transferable digital skills that can be used to complete tasks (i.e., resource connection, job searching, using skills on the job, accessing health and/or financial services).

On June 20, 2024, Workforce Advancement held a Goodwill TECH launch event, Summer Connect to TECH, at the Goodwill Community Center (GCC). The first-floor training rooms were packed with participants engaging in digital skill-building sessions led by our Career Advancement Trainers and Digital Navigator.

Participants used our virtual reality (VR) headsets to complete career exploration activities focused on skilled trade careers. They also learned about our Goodwill Career and Technical Academy (GCTA) and enjoyed a visit from Amy’s Ice Cream truck. Over 30 participants left with laptops, and those who needed internet access also took home hotspots!
