National Skilled Trades Day: Pro Tips for Breaking Into the Industry

Are you interested in pursuing a skilled trades career, but unsure where to start? You’ve come to the right place!

Recently, we explained the benefits of working in the skilled trades. Today, in honor of National Skilled Trades Day, we’re covering how to actually start a career in this field. Keep reading to discover our pro tips for breaking into the skilled trades. Along the way, you’ll also learn how Goodwill Central Texas can help you make your career dreams a reality!

1. Choose Your Ideal Career Path

The skilled trades encompass a wide range of industries. From construction and carpentry to welding, plumbing, and electrical work, there are tons of career options. The first step is figuring out where your interests and strengths align.

For Zach Phuong, an 18-year-old graduate of the Goodwill Career and Technical Academy (GCTA) Electrical Helper program, that choice was clear. “I’ve always been a computer type of guy. I’m good with electrical stuff and I’m a problem solver,” he shares. “Being an electrician has so many endless opportunities. I really want to travel, and there’s always a need [for electrical workers] everywhere in the world.”

Not sure what suits you best? The GCTA offers multiple short-term training programs designed to help you explore and excel in a variety of skilled trades.

2. Get the Right Education

Once you’ve found your focus, training is the next step—and Goodwill Central Texas has you covered. Through The Excel Center, adults can earn their high school diplomas tuition-free, while also working toward certifications in high-demand fields. Meanwhile, the GCTA offers hands-on, fast-track programs that prepare students for real-world jobs in as little as five weeks. These programs include certifications and/or courses in:

Zach emphasizes how valuable that fast-paced learning was for him:

“I was told I could get my apprenticeship in five weeks, which was awesome. Usually other trade schools take a year or two. I’m ready to work and ready to make some money.”

Zach’s GCTA instructor, Ted Roan, a seasoned tradesman himself, knows that high-quality instruction is key:

“We’re building their confidence, muscle memory, and real-world skills,” he says. “There’s no better feeling than seeing a student walk out of here ready to work on a job site safely and competently.”

3. Get Help Landing the Job

Training is just the beginning. Once you’re certified and job-ready, Goodwill Central Texas’ Workforce Advancement team is here to help you take the final step: landing the job. Workforce Advancement offers services to ensure you’re fully supported in your transition into the workforce. These wraparound services include everything from career coaching to resume writing and interview preparation.

The Workforce Advancement team works hand-in-hand with GCTA graduates to help them identify career goals, overcome barriers to employment, and connect directly with job openings in their field.

Whether you need help navigating job boards, finding the right fit for your skill set, or understanding what to expect in a skilled trades interview, the Workforce Advancement staff provides personalized guidance tailored to your goals.

Pro tip: Don’t wait until after graduation to connect. The earlier you engage with Workforce Advancement, the more strategic your job search can be.

Bonus Tip: Understand What Employers Are Looking For

Research the skilled trades industry you’re interested in. After all, a big part of getting a new job is understanding what employers in your desired field are looking for. Read about companies in the industry, check out tips from recruiters, and learn everything you can about the hiring practices of companies you want to work for. This research will help you present yourself to potential employers in the best possible light.

Beyond the technical skills, employers typically want to hire people who are reliable, motivated, and ready to work. That’s where Goodwill Staffing Group (GSG) Talent Solutions comes in. GSG helps match trained individuals with employers who are actively hiring across the skilled trades.

According to GSG Talent Solutions Sr. Director of Operations, Brian Nixon, “Skilled trades are the backbone of Central Texas, and employers are seeking reliable, job-ready talent more than ever. At GSG Talent Solutions, we offer more than staffing. We provide a network of training, support, and long-term success for both the employer and the employee.”

GCTA skilled trades instructor Ted Roan also has thoughts on what employers are looking for:

“There’s such a shortage of skilled tradespeople. The demand is huge. Employers are looking for people who show up, learn fast, and can work hard. We give our students those exact skills.”

Final Thoughts: There’s Power in a New Path

Zach’s story reflects a growing trend: young people and career changers choosing skilled trades as a faster (and often more fulfilling) path.

“All my friends are in college. I’m taking a different route, and I think it’s way more effective,” he says. “I’m learning a lot and having fun. I actually look forward to coming here every day.”

Zach is already setting his sights on commercial work in big cities. His long-term vision?

“My dream job is working on commercial buildings—maybe helping build new places, evolving in bigger cities, and making money while doing it.”

Whether you’re 18 like Zach or mid-career and seeking a change, Goodwill Central Texas offers the tools, training, and connections to help you succeed.
